Kokilai and Nayaru Attack on ancient fishing villages

On 1st Dec 1984, armed LTTE terrorists attacked the two ancient fishing villages in the northeastern coast killing 11 civilians including women and children. 13 others suffered injuries. After the attack the government vacated the two villages. The villagers of Kokilai were moved to Pulmuddai and those in Nayaru to Mullaittivu.

Dr. Wickrama Weerasooriy , then chairman of the media committee , Ministry of Defence told media that several woman accompanying the terrorists had looted the goods of the fish folks while their counterparts had gone on murdering the innocent civilians. The terrorists set fire on the houses of the villagers before they leave. According to Dr. Weerasoosriya, the forces could not reach the village at time because the approach routes had been mined
